17: Steve Burnside
Steve Burnside (voiced by Bill Houston) is Claire's partner in the game and a playable character during a short portion of the main story. He was imprisoned in the Rockfort Island's facility alongside his father, a former Umbrella employee. He escapes from his cell during the viral outbreak. At first, he is hesitant to trust Claire and only cooperates with her reluctantly, but later becomes more open and attached to her after he is forced to kill his own father, who has become a zombie during the outbreak. He and Claire eventually end up in Umbrella's Antarctic Facility, where he is captured by Alexia and used as a test subject for the T-Veronica virus. Claire meets a chained Steve, who mutates into a monster and attacks Claire; in this form, he is nearly invulnerable to damage, and wields a giant, ceremonial axe. While running from Steve, Claire is attacked by one of Alexia Ashford's tentacles. Steve, seeing this, regains control of his mind and cuts the tentacle apart, freeing Claire. In retaliation, Alexia Ashford strikes him with one of the tentacles, inflicting a mortal wound. His failing body finally rejects the mutation, and he turns back to human. He dies in Claire's arms, just after professing his love to her.
In the extended ending of the game, Wesker mentions that he recovered Steve's corpse as he was infected with the T-Veronica virus and that he "may be brought back to life just as (Wesker) was".

After Code Veronica, Steve was deffinately brought back to life by one Albert Wesker. More for personal needs then anything else. Steve struggled with the loss of his humanity, and his feelings for one Claire Redfield. After rejecting Wesker for so long, he finally gives in and eventually falls in love with him. (Now, before we have someone flip out. No. Steve is not gay. He's bisexual. Or more, he fell in love with a man. Yes. He still loves Claire, but he knows it wont work out. I had to give that information, cause I had someone freak out on me once.)
When Birkin came back, things went to shit for Steve. He grew a deep hatred for the scientist. Though the two tried to play nicely, especially when the twins were born. Eventually, Steve won, driving William off. He's basically the sole parental role of Shaun. Wesker is a busy man after all.
He's now a weapons specialist. He helps train others in combat. He goes on most missions and knows quite a bit about sanctum and Project New Dawn. He seems quite happy, but inside he's growing restless.
